An AIB College of Business graduate, Karla has over 21 years experience as a freelance court reporter, official reporter, CART provider, realtime captioner, and realtime captioner trainer. Karla has been an NCRA member for over 21 years. She has served as a director of the Iowa Court Reporters Association for three years and has also been an ICRA seminar presenter. She captioned over 13 years for VITAC, including the State of the Union, the Summer and Winter Olympics, and the Royal Wedding of William and Kate, just to name a few.
Karla is an Iowa Certified Shorthand Reporter and holds the following NCRA certifications: Registered Merit Reporter (RMR), Certified Realtime Reporter (CRR), Certified Broadcast Captioner (CBC), Certified CART Provider (CCP, now known as Certified Realtime Captioner, CRC), and Certified Reporting Instructor (CRI).
Karla is currently a member of the DMACC Newton Realtime Reporting Program Advisory Committee. In 2014 Karla was featured in an article in The New York Times in their "Vocations" column about being a closed captioner. In 2013 and 2014, she participated in the Veterans History Project at AIB and DMACC Newton, where she reported and transcribed the personal recollections of U.S. wartime veterans to honor their service and share their stories with current and future generations.
From 2004 to 2010, Karla was a member of the AIB Grant Writing Evaluation Team, along with two of her local colleagues. Between 2003 and 2011, Karla hosted many AIB court reporting students at her office for their captioning internships. She continues to be involved in student outreach by going to career fairs at Des Moines area middle schools and high schools to educate students and teachers about realtime reporting careers.
Currently, Ms. Ray is dedicated to helping adult learners become realtime broadcast and CART captioners.
